Wat Sri Sunthon, also known as Wat Lipon, is a Buddhist temple located in Thalang, a district of Phuket.
Wat Sri Sunthon’s main notable feature is the large reclining Buddha statue located on the roof of the main hall. The statue measures over 29 meters long and is covered in gold leaf. It is believed to be the largest reclining Buddha statue on Phuket Island.
Wat Sri Sunthon was built under Rama I in 1792 in honor of one of the heroine sisters who saved Phuket from the Burmese. The ceremonial hall contains a statue of a seated Buddha. The walls are decorated with intricate murals depicting scenes from the Buddha’s life and various Buddhist stories.
The main building of the temple, the ubosot, where only monks are allowed to enter, is made in a very simple style. On the roof, there is a 29-meter statue of a reclining Buddha. Visitors can climb the stairs to the statue on the right. The best thing about Sisunthon temple is that there are no crowds of tourists here. You can sit in tree shade and meditate.
