Karon Temple
Karon Temple, also known as Wat Suwan Khiri Khet, is located on Karon beach. It is one of the largest temples in the area. The temple features traditional Thai architectural styles, intricate carvings, and colorful murals.
Karon Temple is located 500 meters from Karon beach. If you are staying in the north of Karon Beach, it will not be difficult to walk a few minutes to the temple.
Karon Temple offers a peaceful and serene environment for visitors to learn about Thai culture, religion, and history, as well as a chance to experience the local community and traditional events. You can observe the daily activities of the monks, including chanting, meditation, and other religious practices.
The temple is known to most visitors to Phuket for the market that is held here twice a week. It starts around 4 pm and ends late in the evening. Perhaps the temple market is more popular with foreign visitors than the temple itself. Locals come to the temple to pray. It plays a big role in the life of the local community.
Karon Temple is not just a place of worship, but also a community center where local people gather to celebrate festivals and Buddhist events. Some of the most popular events held at Karon Temple include the Songkran Festival and Visakha Bucha Day.
Several buildings are located on the temple’s territory. The main building, called the vihan, is guarded by two huge snake-like Nagas. Their bodies wrap around the entire building. Scenes from the life of Buddha are engraved on the doors and windows.
Another building is guarded by blue giants. They are called “yaks” in Thai mythology. These creatures protect the temple and scare away spirits.
Karon Temple also features a large statue of Buddha, several smaller shrines, and a bell tower. The temple grounds are well-maintained, and you can take part in traditional Thai activities such as lighting incense and making offerings. There are also several smaller shrines within the temple complex dedicated to other deities.
Karon Temple is open daily, and admission is free. You should note that Karon Temple is a religious site, and it is expected that visitors dress modestly and remove their shoes when entering the temple buildings.
